ABOUT THE LABEL
The Jacksons' beautiful and durable handmade jute "word bags" are a joyful result of a design collaboration between Louise and skilled artisans in southwestern Bangladesh. The partnership began in 2012, and The Jacksons now work closely with over 5000 women in Bangladesh, in an area where there are few job opportunities for them. We do more than design and create a brand: We strive to overcome poverty and improve the social status of women. Through this dynamic collaboration, they now have access to free medical care and schools. Our women are paid directly, giving them independence and status and empowering them to make decisions within the family. A large percentage educate their daughters up to sixth grade, and some go on to university. Six years ago, this was impossible, and Louise visits regularly to see firsthand the real benefits.


Jute is known as the "golden fiber" of Bangladesh; it is 100% vegetable and has great flexibility and strength. In fact, our bags can carry up to 14 kilos! This "macramé" hand technique relies entirely on the expertise of our women. They work in their own homes adapting to family life, the jute plant is harvested by hand using age-old methods. No machines are used, only their talented hands. They untangle and clean the raw jute, spin it with their fingers and clean up with scissors, dye what is needed with azo-free dyes, and knot the bags into our carefully crafted designs. There are many different stages in our process, from our design space in Notting Hill to the wonderfully talented artisans in southwest Bangladesh, and each step is as important as the next to ensure our commitment to beautiful, well-made fashionable bags.
